Summoning in Final Fantasy IV
As we know, Mist's guardian died to Kain and Cecil. In doing so, they condemned Rydia's mother, it's summoner, and she died as a result of her connection to the Mist Dragon. So...why didn't Golbez die with the shadow dragon he summoned at Giott's Castle when Rydia made her badass entrance to the fight? Here's my response/resolution to the plot hole:
Summoners make a pact when they undergo training in the ancient, dwindling art of summoning in the FFIV realm. This pact demonstrates that Eidolons will come when called no matter the consequence, but this is contingent to their lives intertwining with that of the summoner. Not only will this protect Eidolons from foolish fightingby the summoners by proxy of Eidolons (like a lethal Pokemon battle), but it gives the summoners assurance that when they deem the risk necessary, the Eidolons will always be there for them.
Golbez was powerful and evil enough to essentially "steal" the shadow dragon, as he called on its inherent dark nature to summon it by force. Since Golbez is not a summoner (as far as we know), he did not undergo the pact and as such didn't have to die when the shadow dragon died.
Naturally, Leviathan was pissed; in fact, horrified that Rydia is the last summoner standing, and orders Titan to protect her and give him a chance to bring her to the Feymarch so he could fight in the battle that has killed one of his subjects, and the summoners.
It not only explains Titan creating mountains when Rydia is a child and clearly cannot summon him, it also explains Golbez's weird summoning situation, and Leviathan taking Rydia to the Feymarch and training her to adulthood :)

I'm so tired. Work has been shit, my health has been questionable, my family is falling apart health-wise and relationship-wise. I just really want a nice deep sleep. Can we go back to the late 90s early 2000s, watching Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! and pretending everything was going to be okay?

Oooo man do I have a manifesto in mind. This is regarding best boi Edge, the prince Edward Geraldine, the ninja with dashing looks and mystifying skills---
I digress. The amount of times I've seen people in forums call him a pedophile for crushing on Rydia?!
Best boi Edge is not a pedo.
The entire basis I've seen of this argument has been that Rydia is canonically 7 years old. This is incorrect. Assuming a calendar year span revolutions of the sun like our world, she has chronologically lived through 7 revolutions of the sun, but when she went to the Feymarch (or the Summoned Lands depending on the version you played), she aged up. She cannot age up physically without aging up mentally, either.I have no idea where the basis for this thought came from either.
How would it have worked?
How would she have had the grace to forgive Cecil for destroying her village, facilitating the genocide of her people, and killing her mother right in front of her if she was not mentally aging, either?
I could maybe grant some leeway based on the following cutscene line Edge says on the Lunar Whale:
"This is work for grownups. You just wait for us back here."
Here's my rebuttal: everyone else had met her as a child, and there's a whole side quest that can occur where you travel to the Feymarch with the final party. It's almost impossible for Edge to not have known her background by this point of the story, and he could've used it as a sore spot to get her off of the ship, especially considering how fast he could get under her skin and how fast they devolved into spats. Side note: when Leviathan sees Rydia in the Feymarch, he calls her "a fine young woman." The Eidolon who raised here off screen, arguably the only being who may know how old she actually is, thinks she's grown.
I'm on AO3, participating in the FFIV fandom as much as I can :) I used to be on FFN (I am now, too, but I used to be, also) under a username I've long since forgotten and an account I no longer have access to (back in like 2008-ish?). I've been writing genfics but I like reading most everything for that universe. My favorite pairing is Edge x Rydia, but most pairings I've seen people write for have been pretty awesome - I subscribe to don't like, don't read, so you'll not know what I don't like unless I tell you personally.
Current Passion:
Still Final Fantasy IV, always and forever.
